LEARNING HOW TO DEBATE

At Dallington School, the development of pupils’ communication and thinking skills is one of our key objectives. Our teachers will help pupils acquire these skills-which will be so important in their personal and professional lives- through a wide range of  methods and activities.

Debating ,for example, plays a crucial role in pupils’ language and thinking development. They learn how to think through ideas, form and present arguments, and provide evidence. Equally important, pupils have to listen carefully to others’ opinions, create counterarguments, use specific vocabulary, and follow the protocols of debate.

In last term’s Global Awareness topic, pupils in Years 4 and 5 carried out an impressive debate and showed their extraordinary potential. They will have many more opportunities to fully exploit that potential.
